A couple of weeks ago, The Messas Law Practice had the pleasure of attending (and actively organizing and participating in) the 22nd Annual Small Law Firm Symposium hosted by the New York City Bar Association. This yearly gathering has become a touchstone event for solo practitioners and boutique firms\u2014part professional refresh, part strategic power-up, and part reunion of people who get it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because let\u2019s be honest: building a law practice is equal parts vision, grit, spreadsheets, client care, and caffeine. Lots of caffeine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A Day Designed for the Modern Small Firm<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The symposium offered a full-day of programming, designed for firms that want to do things differently: think lean, personal, agile, and impactful. Here were some highlights from the agenda:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Morning Kickoff:<\/p>\n\n\n\n We started with Financial Management for Law Firms\u2014a timely session on making numbers your ally, not your adversary. (If you\u2019ve ever tried to bill, reconcile trust accounts, and budget for next quarter staffing in the same morning: yes, this one hit home.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Practice Building Sessions Included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n And of course, the crowd favorite:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Guided Networking\u2014AKA, \u201cFind your people and exchange cards while balancing a coffee in one hand and a notebook in the other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Real Value: Community<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n For small firm owners, it can sometimes feel like we\u2019re all running our own mini-islands: managing cases, operations, HR, billing, and client expectations solo or with a lean team. Events like this remind us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n We\u2019re not on islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We\u2019re in an archipelago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We face the same challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And we are inventing the future of legal practice\u2014together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was especially meaningful to see so many attorneys openly sharing not just what works, but what doesn\u2019t. In a profession known for polished exteriors, this honesty is both refreshing and necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why The Messas Law Practice Shows Up<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Our firm was founded during a moment of uncertainty and change (yes, 2020\u2014we don\u2019t need to say more).
